Six countries (the “Big Five” financial contributors to the European Broadcasting Union plus the host country) have direct qualification to the Eurovision grand final on May 22nd.
FRANCE Barbara Pravi “Voilà”
Parisienne Barbara is an accomplished singer, songwriter and actress. She co-composed the song which won 2020 Junior Eurovision for France. In recent years she has adopted a more traditional “chanson” style rather than her earlier pop.
GERMANY Jendrik “I Don’t Feel Hate”
A relative unknown, young Hamburger Jedrick Sigwart came to German Eurovision selection team courtesy of some humourous videos posted online during lockdown. he studied music at Osnabrück University and has starred as Peter Pan on the musical stage.
ITALY Måneskin “Zitti e buoni”
Italy are sending Roman rock to Rotterdam. Maneskin comprises Damiano, Victoria, Thomas and Ethan. They came to prominence as finalists in the 2017 version of Italian X-Factor.
NETHERLANDS Jeangu Macrooy “??”
Jeangu hails from Suriname and moved to the Netherlands in 2014. Since then he has released two successful albums and performed extensively in Germany as well as the Netherlands. At Easter 2018 he portrayed the part of Judas in Dutch TV’s annual Passion play.
SPAIN Blas Canto “Voy a quedarme”
Blas Cantó Moreno is from the Murcia region of Spain. In 2004 he was a finalist in the Spanish selection for Junior Eurovision. Seven years later as part of boyband Auryn he made the last three of the Spanish senior national final. He released his first solo album in 2018 which included singles called “In Your Bed” and “Drunk And Irresponsible”.
UNITED KINGDOM James Newman “Embers”
James is a singer-songwriter whose impressive CV includes a Brit Award in 2014 as co-composer of Rudimental’s “Waiting All Night”. The brother of singer John, he was chosen in 2020 as part of a new initiative of the BBC to collaborate with BMG Records. In March 2021 he was confirmed as another artist from the abandoned 2020 contest to get another go.
